Finding Fiordland's Perfect Season

As we reflect on the incredible past seasons we've shared with guests, a question we often hear is: "when is the best time to visit Cabot Lodge and the Fiordland region?" The beautiful truth is, much like the ever-changing landscapes around us, every season here offers its own unique magic, creating unforgettable memories for different reasons.

Summer (December - February)

If you're dreaming of long, sun-kissed days stretching into the evening, Summer is your ideal time to visit. December, January and February bring the warmest temperatures to Fiordland, perfect for embracing the outdoors. Manapouri has the privilege of the longest daylight hours in the country over Summer, ensuring guests can spend a full day exploring the fiords and still return home to the Lodge for an early evening beekeeping tour, hands-on 4WD farm tour, or exhilarating sheepdog demonstration. For those who love being active, the Great Walks season is in full swing, offering unparalleled hiking experiences on the Kepler, Milford and Routeburn Tracks. Following a day of adventure, Summer offers the perfect opportunity to dine al fresco at the Lodge with a bottle of crisp New Zealand sauvignon blanc.

Autumn (March - May)

As March arrives, a serene calm begins to settle over the region. The air grows crisp, and while the native bush remains a vibrant green, the exotic trees across the property burst into a symphony of golden, amber and crimson. This is a truly special time for those seeking a more peaceful escape. The mild temperatures make for incredibly comfortable walks across our property, where you can truly immerse yourself in the changing scenery. The quiet beauty of Doubtful and Milford Sound becomes even more profound with fewer crowds. This time of year is a photographer's dream. It is also a perfect season for quiet reflection; guests can enjoy a private yoga class at the Lodge and make the most of our intimate atmosphere with only four guest suites on the property.

Winter (June - August)

While daylight hours shorten, Winter in Fiordland often surprises with its remarkably settled, clear and crisp days. The mountains don a fresh dusting of snow, transforming the landscape into a breathtaking wonderland. Imagine witnessing a stunning sunrise over snow-capped peaks from the comfort of Cabot Lodge, before bracing the elements to enjoy a dip in our mountain side, open-air hot tub, then returning to the warmth of one of the Lodge’s four roaring fireplaces. This season offers a more dramatic experience of Fiordland's grandeur, with thundering waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and the lush evergreen of the Fiordland National Park. It's a wonderful time for scenic flights, cozy evenings, and for passionate star gazers it is the best time to witness the majestic dark sky sanctuary above the Lodge.

Spring (September - November)

As September rolls around, Fiordland awakens with a renewed energy. Lambs dot the pastures, daffodils bloom, and the vibrant greenery and colours of the Lodge gardens and farm returns in full force. While Spring can bring a mix of weather, it’s a season of fresh beginnings and exciting activity. The warmer temperatures are perfect for beekeeping tours, and the burgeoning life on the property makes for a particularly charming 4WD farm tour. It's a time of optimism and renewal, and the perfect opportunity to enjoy a rejuvenating massage at the Lodge spa or learn new skills with our private cooking classes.

Ultimately, the "best" time to visit Cabot Lodge is a deeply personal choice, depending on what you seek from your Fiordland adventure. Each season offers a unique blend of natural beauty, activities, and opportunities to connect with the authentic rhythm of our farm and family. Whenever you choose to join us, know that you'll be welcomed with the warmth and hospitality that defines the Cabot Lodge experience.

We can't wait to help you create your own unforgettable memories, whatever the season may bring!
